I received a free ebook of this title from Berkley Prime Crime via NetGalley in exchange for a honest review and to participate in the book tour hosted by Escape with Dollycas .

This is the third in the A Retired Witches Mystery Series written by the prolific team of Joyce and Jim Lavene, who have both recently passed away and are  missed greatly by the writing and cozy mystery community.  Their website, which includes all their series is found here.

I haven’t read books 1 or 2 of the previous books in this series…we have them, but they are out on loan with other members of the ‘Final Chapter’ readers group that I run.  Unlike other members, I don’t have a problem in reading books out of order. 😀

So with that in mind, here are my thoughts…for what they are worth! 🙂

We start the book with Dorothy’s father, the renegade witch Drago turning up out of the blue, wanting to get to know his daughter, that Olivia (her mother, who is now a ghost) hid her away from him at her birth.  The covens spell book is still missing.  And the ladies are invited to the Fuller castle for a Witches Ball in honour of Brian’s birthday.

But when one of the members of the Witches council is murdered at the Ball and discovered by the ladies and Brian.  Brian’s grandfather has put the castle in 24 hour lockdown and has called in the ‘Witch Finder’.  The small group must discover who really committed the murder, before Brian’s grandfather make a decision to ‘choose’ who he thinks is guilty…and his eyes keep straying to them!

This was really a very fun and enjoyable read, with a great set of characters, plot and well written.  So glad that I have the others books to read, and will be getting this one to finish the set.

5 Stars*****

In the latest mystery from the bestselling authors of Looking for Mr. Good Witch, the retired witches of Wilmington, North Carolina, are ready to kick up their heels…
With their coven’s spell book still missing, Molly and Elsie—along with their ghostly friend Olivia, her daughter Dorothy, and her boyfriend Brian—are all on edge, especially now that Dorothy’s infamously wicked father is back in the picture. So when they receive an invitation to an exclusive Witches Ball, the ladies jump at the chance to dress up and have some fun.

The castle locale is spectacular and the party is hopping, but the festivities come to a swift end when a member of the Grand Council of Witches is murdered. With the whole place on lock down, the coven is determined to find the cunning killer, even with an angry council and a real Spanish Inquisitor breathing down their necks…
